Wat is een railgemonteerde gantrykraan?
Een railgemonteerde gantrykraan (RMG) is een type grote, gespecialiseerde gantrykraan die veelvuldig wordt gebruikt om containers van goederentreinen en vrachtwagens te laden en lossen op containerterminals. Deze kranen zijn gemonteerd op rails, waardoor ze langs een spoor kunnen rijden om zich precies boven de juiste container of lading te positioneren voor efficiënt hanteren.
Ze realiseren respectievelijk de drie bewegingen van het omhoog- en omlaaghijsen van lading, horizontaal (links-rechts) verplaatsen en longitudinaal (voor-achter) verplaatsen, waardoor een werkgebied wordt gevormd
Afhankelijk van het gebruik worden havencontainerkranen RMG ingezet op spoorweggoederenterminals en havencontainers terminals. Afhankelijk van de constructie zijn er hijsmechanismen met stijve ophangsystemen en met flexibele ophangsystemen.
Belangrijke kenmerken van railgemonteerde gantrykranen zijn:
- Rails: RMG-kranen zijn uitgerust met wielen die langs een spoor- of railsysteem rollen, waardoor zij lateraal kunnen bewegen en zich nauwkeurig kunnen positioneren in het laad- en losgebied.
- Hijscapaciteit: RMG-kranen zijn doorgaans ontworpen voor het hanteren van zware lasten, vaak in het bereik van 30 tot 80 ton of meer, waardoor ze geschikt zijn voor het efficiënt overbrengen van grote containers.
- Precisie en besturing: Deze kranen staan bekend om hun nauwkeurige besturingssystemen, die nauwkeurige en efficiënte positionering van containers tijdens het laden en lossen mogelijk maken.

The Characteristics of Rail-mounted Container Gantry Cranes
Rail-mounted container gantry cranes have the following characteristics:
The lifting speed is relatively slow while the main car runs at a higher speed. Based on the requirements of the container yard, the lifting height of the rail-mounted container gantry crane is determined according to the stacking height three-over-four or four-over-five. As the lifting height is not high, the lifting speed is correspondingly lower. However, as the container yard generally has a long length along the running track direction, a higher speed is required for the main car to ensure a certain level of productivity.
The speed of the trolley can be determined according to the span of the crane and the extension distance at both ends. When the span and the cantilever length are relatively short, a lower trolley running speed and productivity requirement may be acceptable. When the span and the cantilever length are large, the trolley running speed can be correspondingly increased to meet the productivity requirement.
When the span exceeds 40 meters, during high-speed operation of the main car, offset may occur due to different running resistances on both sides. Consequently, a synchronization device is set up to maintain the synchronicity of the running mechanism on both sides through the electrical control system.
To meet higher usage requirements, the electrical drive control system adopts thyristor direct current or alternating current speed control system to achieve better speed regulation and control performance. The electrical control system can also adopt conventional alternating current eddy current speed control or alternating current stator pressure regulating speed control system.
For the electrical control system of the main car running mechanism with higher speed, thyristor direct current, alternating current speed control system, or alternating current stator pressure regulating speed control system with electrical braking are usually used to avoid using the conventional electrical drive system’s braking method during running and parking, which may bring significant impact to the entire machine.
Container RMG Crane Main Layout Forms
In addition to the special selection of the lifting mechanism, the trolley running mechanism and the main car running mechanism of the rail-mounted container gantry crane are basically the same as those of other bridge and gantry type cranes.
Lifting mechanism. The lifting mechanism can be in two forms, wire rope drum type and is basically the same as the tyre-mounted container gantry crane’s lifting mechanism; whereas the rigid telescopic lifting mechanism is similar to the lifting mechanism of a gantry crane with clamps used in steel mills and metallurgy.
Wire rope drum type lifting mechanism is composed of DC or AC motor, gear couplings, disc or block brakes, medium-hard surface reducer, gear couplings between the reducer and the drum, twin drums and bearing seats. It consists of lifting wire ropes, pulleys, and hoisting pulley groups.
The rigid telescopic lifting mechanism can be a wire rope drum hoisting mechanism; a hydraulic cylinder hoisting mechanism; a balance weight gear rack hoisting mechanism along with the telescopic guided steel structure. The wire rope drum hoisting mechanism is simple in construction and is similar to other lifting mechanisms. As the steel structure has a certain rigidity, the lifting mechanism can also be divided into two groups, which is advantageous for arrangement. The hydraulic cylinder hoisting mechanism is well-balanced and structurally simple, but requires higher maintenance.
Trolley running mechanism. The trolley running mechanism is composed of DC or AC motor, gear couplings, disc or block brakes, medium-hard surface reducer, low-speed gear couplings, and cart wheels and wheel supports. The arrangement of the drive mechanism is generally in two ways: along the trolley track direction and perpendicular to the trolley track direction. The number of driving wheels is determined based on conditions without slippage. Modern designs generally use full-drive.
Main car running mechanism. The main car running mechanism typically uses three or four-wheel trolleys, determined based on the size of the wheel pressure. The construction and form of the running mechanism are similar to other types of cranes. If an open gear drive trolley is used, it is composed of DC or AC motor, gear couplings, brakes, medium-hard surface reducer, open gears, cart wheels and wheel supports; conversely, if an enclosed transmission is used, the output shaft of the reducer is directly connected to the trolley axle for direct drive, but the transmission ratio of the reducer will be slightly larger.
Due to the faster running speed of the main car and to prevent wheel slippage during braking, electrical control systems such as thyristor DC voltage regulation and speed regulation, AC variable frequency speed regulation, AC stator speed regulation are generally used for good speed control capability.
Rail-Mounted Container Gantry Crane Development Trends
To improve the efficiency of yard operations, rail-mounted container gantry cranes are trending towards larger sizes and automation. Furthermore, the development includes the use of high-level structure rail-mounted container gantry cranes that travel at high speed on tracks composed of reinforced concrete columns and rail-carrying beams.
Rail-Mounted Container Gantry Crane
Rail-mounted container gantry cranes have begun to be put into use in the world’s major container hub ports. Apart from the necessity to add tracks in the container yard, these cranes excel in terms of stack height, stack positioning accuracy control, anti-sway performance, and the structural stress state compared to tire-mounted container gantry cranes.
Due to the use of a rail-mounted system, they are able to bear larger loads by increasing the number of wheels. As a result, the span of the rail-mounted container gantry crane has been increased. Since it is powered by a power cable, the power output is stable; an electronic anti-sway system is utilized, and some large international companies are currently developing fully automatic unmanned container anti-sway positioning systems equipped with positioning feedback devices to enhance operational efficiency.
Container Bridge Crane
In recent years, container bridge cranes have been developed and utilized abroad. Their basic form is similar to that of a gantry crane, with the lifting height being determined based on the container stacking yard and stack height, as well as the height of the cement overhead passage.
Container bridge cranes use a skewed box girder structure. To facilitate the placement of electrical system devices, one of the girder sections is larger, providing space not only for the electrical cabinet but also for a walkway. The running trolley is basically similar to other running trolleys. The main feature of the main car running mechanism is its high running speed, significantly improving the efficiency of container loading and unloading.
Container bridge cranes use a fully automatic electronic anti-sway and positioning control system, and special consideration is given to the anti-sway issue in the direction of main car travel due to its high speed. Two methods, namely the sliding contact line and cable drum, are used for power supply.
